After one too many times in the dishwasher, porous glass corrodes and your glasses get white smears that are not nice to see. That’s no reason for you to discard them – turn them into something new!
What you need:
a glass
pieces of broken plates or plastic mosaic tiles (available at hobby shops)
clear colourless silicone
plaster (or mosaic plaster)
disposable gloves
tongs
a plastic dish
a sponge
Use the tongs to carefully cut the pieces of broken plates or ceramic tiles to the size of your liking (hobby shops offer pre-cut tile pieces).
Apply a layer of silicone to the back of each piece and stick it to the glass. Be creative – combine various colours and textures. It is important to only leave 2-3 mm space among them.
Once all the pieces are arranged, leave the glass to dry completely – preferably, overnight.
Mix the (mosaic) plaster with water according to the instructions. It needs to be thick, yet still liquid. Use a wooden stick to apply the plaster to the glass, filling in all the gaps.
Once covered, use a moist sponge to remove the excess plaster, thus cleaning the tile pieces and enabling the plaster to remain in the joints.
Once the plaster is completely dry, your glass is ready for a new stage in life – as a pencil holder on your desk, a toothbrush holder in your bathroom or a vase or decorative flower pot.
